What the work has taught me.
In Clean Code, Robert C. Martin wrote that “the ratio of time spent reading versus writing is well over 10 to 1.” AI agents have not made that observation obsolete. They can produce code quickly, but engineers still need to read it, understand the system around it, and take responsibility for what becomes part of the software. That understanding is also what allows us to give agents the right context and steer the work.
